Water Heater Timers

WHY INSTALL A WATER HEATER TIMER?

The US Department of Energy estimates a 12% to 26% reduction in water heating cost with the appropriate use of a timer.  You can reduce the kilowatt hours (kWh) portion of your bill by using a water heater timer so that it is only heating water when you really need it.  An added benefit from using a timer MAY be a reduction in the demand portion (kW) of your bill. Please discuss your situation with OCEC Member Services staff to see if this might apply to your home.

How does installing a timer on your water heater reduce energy consumption?

  • It reduces unnecessary reheating of water when not needed, lowering kWh usage.  Members who go long periods of time between using their hot water without shutting off their circuit breakers will especially benefit.
  • You can program it so that its portion of your home demand is not at the same time as other elements of your home.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE REBATE PROGRAM:

  • Bring your OCEC bill with you to North Valley Lumber.
  • Purchase a timer (average cost $48.00).

  • Install the timer yourself or have an electrician install the timer, and follow your permit instructions for obtaining an inspection.
